Messianic Certitude
Bill Clinton screwed around with Monica Lewinsky, and then misled the electorate. His actions were blamed on his uncontrolled sexual drive. His presidency remained under a cloud because of it. He apologized and he left office with high approval.
George Bush screwed around with Iraq, and then misled the electorate. His actions were blamed on his messianic certainty. His presidency remained under a cloud because of it. He has yet to apologize and his approval ratings are in the thirties.
Not sure I like messianic certitude driving our country’s highest policy decisions. Isn't that what we are fighting against abroad?
What do I want driving our country’s highest policy decisions? I’ll tell you – I want the best available wisdom, scientific facts, expert opinion, outside opinion, and conversation with the electorate – I want that strategic level decision to be based on the criteria of quality of life. Financial - “bottom line” - improvement should be pushed to the tactical level decisions. I want my country, when possible, to reach out for cooperative and shared solutions; and to accept our place in the world community with humility, honesty, and behaviors appropriate to our common and historic principles.
And our principles are bed rocked on the concept that everyone is born with certain inalienable rights. The question is, has homosexuality been clarified in the minds of those who can offer it (whether they be judges, legislators, executives, or the electorate), such that they are willing to allow us the full citizenship, the full equality, that inalienable rights confer to each citizen?
